BMKG Detects 2 Strong Earthquakes Hit South Kalimantan, Lombok

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two powerful earthquakes occurred at the same hour, early today, August 29, 2023. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a 7.4-magnitude quake rocked South Kalimantan at 02:55 Western Indonesian Time (WIB).
The quake was detected at 180 kilometers of Tanah Bumbu, South Kalimantan, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The other quake jolted North Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province measuring at 6.5 magnitudes on the Richter scale. It was centered 94 kilometers northeast of North Lombok at a depth of 571 kilometers.
As observed from the BMKG’s social media account, a lot of residents claimed they were awakened by the quake. Some of them mentioned their locations, including in the southern region of the earthquake such as Bali, Lombok, Banyuwangi, Jembe, Kebumen, and Malang.
