TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo inaugurated today the Light Rail Transit or LRT Jabodebek at Cawang LRT Station, South Jakarta.
“By saying Bismillahirrohmanirrohim (In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful), this morning I inaugurated the integrated LRT in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, and Bekasi areas, thank you,” Jokowi said on Monday, August 28, 2023.
He said that Jakarta is listed in the top 10 most congested cities in the world, with 996,000 vehicles in the city. According to him, this is the reason for the construction of MRT, LRT, KRL, TransJakarta, BRT, and airport train facilities.
The goal, he added, is to get everyone to switch from private vehicles to mass transportation. This is not easy indeed. Take the MRT, for example. Although it looks full every day, it has yet to reach its targeted daily capacity of 180,000 passengers. There are still 80,000 empty seats.
“Alhamdulillah (Praise to God), the LRT is also operational today, both from Harjamukti in Cibubur and from Bekasi to Jakarta, along 41.2 kilometers. [The construction of] LRT spent a budget of Rp32.6 trillion. We hope that people will use the LRT so that we can avoid traffic jams and reduce pollution,” said Jokowi.
The Transportation Ministry through the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) earlier announced that the fare would remain flat at Rp5,000 for all services until the end of September 2023. The ministry’s spokesperson Adita Irawati said this was to commemorate Indonesia's 78th Independence Day and in a bid to introduce the LRT Jabodebek to the public.
Adita explained that the government prepared the next fare scheme at a maximum of Rp20,000 which will be effective in early October 2023 until the end of February 2024.
