TEMPO.CO, Penajam - Chairman of the IKN Infrastructure Development Task Force, Danis Sumadilaga, stated that the construction of the immersed tunnel in the new capital city will commence in 2024.
“We have just finished the feasibility study, and then we will draft the design. Inshallah, we can start [the construction] next year,” Danis said at IKN Nusantara, North Penajam Paser Regency, East Kalimantan on Wednesday, August 23, 2023.
Danis also said that after the design is prepared, the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) would conduct an auction. “The immersed tunnel is designed like a box with a length of 1 to 1.5 km,” he detailed.
The immersed tunnel is part of the IKN’s toll road connecting Balikpapan and the new capital city in Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan. The 47-kilometer toll road will allow the travel time from Sepinggan Airport in Balikpapan to the new capital to be only about 30 minutes.
“If we can start building the immersed tunnel in 2024, it will take about 2-3 years to complete,” Danis added.
The project will be financed from the state budget, but it is also possible to use the government-to-business cooperation (KPBU) scheme. The construction of the undersea tunnel is in line with the forest city concept of IKN as the government is committed to protecting Bekantan and other endemic flora and fauna in the region.
The PUPR Ministry would not build bridges that physically change the morphology of the environment. Many countries have built such underwater bridges, including the Fehmarn Tunnel in Europe and Busan Geoje in South Korea.
