TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's meteorology agency BMKG recorded a tectonic earthquake at a Magnitude 5.1 on Saturday, August 12, at 20:20 western Indonesia time (WIB) in Tomini Bay, Tojo Una Una, Central Sulawesi.

"A shallow quake caused by local fault activity," said Daryono, BMKG head of the earthquake and tsunami center.

He explained that the quake had a strike-slip mechanism. The epicenter was at the sea, 56 kilometers northwest of Tojo Una-Una City, Central Sulawesi, with a hypocenter at 10 kilometers.

The shaking was felt in Ampana at level III-IV of the MMI scale, and in Poso at level III of the MMI scale.

There has been no report on damages caused by the temblor and based on the modeling, the quake did not pose a tsunami threat.

Daryono called on the people to remain calm and not be affected by baseless rumors. He also asked the public to avoid damaged or cracked buildings caused by the earthquake.
