TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Borobudur Temple will be promoted as a spiritual tourism destination. PT Taman Wisata Candi (TWC) Borobudur, Prambanan, and Ratu Boko, the subsidiary of state-run tourism and aviation holding firm InJourney, in tandem with state-run airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I, would organize a Familiarization Trip or Famtrip.
“This activity is an effort to introduce and promote Borobudur Temple as a spiritual destination to inbound tour operators, especially from Thailand and Asian Buddhist-based countries, Buddhist communities, spiritual leaders, and spiritual enthusiasts rapidly emerging after the pandemic,” TWC’s Marketing Director Hetty Herawati said on Friday, August 11, 2023.
Borobudur Temple has the potential to be a world pilgrimage tourism destination
Borobudur has great potential to be named a world pilgrimage tourism destination as it is the largest Buddhist temple in the world with extraordinary historical and spiritual value. Universal values of virtue and philosophy of life are engraved in the reliefs and architecture of the temple.
Borobudur is not only relevant for Buddhists but also for all travelers seeking a spiritual as well as cultural experience. This Famtrip activity is expected to build sustainable cooperation with inbound tour operators in developing international pilgrimage tour packages, increasing spiritual and cultural tourism visits, and encouraging the acceleration of the growth of the tourism ecosystem in the super-priority tourism destinations.
Hetty also said the Famtrip is a concrete manifestation of the growth of spiritual tourism in the Borobudur Temple area, following a number of spiritual events including the Full Moon Vesak Festival. Religious activities at TWC destinations are also part of the quality and sustainable tourism program because they bring a positive economic impact on the community and the surrounding environment.
TWC’s commitment to Borobudur Temple
TWC is committed to developing the Borobudur Temple area based on the balance of four pillars of function, namely conservation, spirituality, education, and tourism. This year, there will be ten Famtrip with the first one on August 8 - 11, 2023. The participants will consist of Bhante from Thailand, inbound tour operators from Thailand, and tour operators from Indonesia.
“The Famtrip participants will be presented with a range of spiritual experiences, meditation, cultural experiences, and regional cuisines in thematic story packages,” explained Hetty.
