TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) chairperson Erick Thohir confirmed that the opening ceremony of the 2023 U-17 World Cup will be held at the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) in North Jakarta. The international game will take place in Indonesia from November 10 to December 2, 2023.
“The opening ceremony will be [held] at JIS,” Erick said in a press conference at the Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Ministry office, South Jakarta, Wednesday, August 9, 2023.
As recently reported, FIFA has agreed to hold the youth tournament at four stadiums, namely JIS in Jakarta, Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, Manahan Stadium in Solo, and Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya.
Erick did not elaborate on the concept for the opening ceremony in November. Yet, he asserted that it will not be as big as the World Cup event. “This is the opening ceremony, don’t equate it with World Cup events, a world championship. So, it will not be that big,” said the man who also serves as SOE Minister.
The closing ceremony of the U-17 World Cup, meanwhile, was planned to take place at the Manahan Stadium in Solo.
Erick Thohir also said that his team is proposing six additional pitches for the footballers to practice on. They are Soemantri Brodjonegoro Sports Hall and Lapangan Banteng in Jakarta, Arcamanik Sports Hall and Lapangan ITB in Bandung, and Lapangan Blulukan and Lapangan UNS in Solo.
“Inshallah, U-17 World Cup in Indonesia will run smoothly. We will become the world stage,” he said.
