TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Andie Megantara, Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, stated that Indonesia needs at least Rp1.4 trillion to accelerate the transformation of the blue economy. At present, about 20-25 percent of the total amount needed is available.
“Other collaborative funding sources are still needed,” Andie said at the National Seminar on Transformation of Maritime Civilization Towards Golden Indonesia 2045 which was broadcast on the Coordinating Ministry’s YouTube channel on Wednesday, August 9, 2023.
As quoted from the United Nations page, the blue economy is the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and jobs while preserving the health of the ocean ecosystem.
Andie said Indonesia has enormous maritime potential both economically and geopolitically. This potential includes 3.36 million hectares of mangroves, 1.78 million hectares of seagrass, 2.5 million hectares of coral reefs, and 28.9 million hectares of protected areas.
Andie also mentioned that Indonesia’s mega biodiversity ranks second in the world after Brazil. The current fishery exports, he added, reached US$5.72 billion.
“Armed with maritime optimization and to achieve the Golden Indonesia vision by 2045, the maritime sector is projected to contribute about 12.5 percent to GDP in 2045,” he reiterated.
Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said his ministry has five priority programs in the transformation of the blue economy.
The five programs are the expansion of marine conservation areas, quota-based measured fishing, the development of sustainable marine, coastal, and inland cultivation, the supervision and control of coastal areas and small islands, and the cleanup of plastic waste in the sea with the participation of fishermen.
