TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted today, August 9, at 11:36 local time. The Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG) reported that the volcano emitted hot clouds reaching 1,000 meters above the crater.
The seismograph that recorded the eruption had a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters for one minute and 22 seconds. The thick gray column of volcanic ash was ejected in an easterly direction.
“The eruption threat remains far from residential areas which are located six to seven kilometers from the crater,” Mount Ibu’s Monitoring Post Officer Ahmad Basuki said in a report released by PVMBG.
Residents and visitors in the vicinity of the volcano are strongly advised to refrain from any activities within a two-kilometer radius of the summit and the sectoral expansion area up to 3.5 kilometers from the crater in the north.
People residing near the mountain are also advised to wear nose and mouth masks and goggles during outdoor activities when volcanic activity produces ash rain.
Mount Ibu has been under the alert status of Waspada (Level II) or Caution since December 10, 2013. PVMBG recorded that the volcano in the northwest of Halmahera Island has had 26 eruptions since January 1, 2023.
