The following is the list of the top three news on Tempo English this week:

1. Ganjar Pranowo Urges Tobacco Industry to Reduce Import, Prioritize Domestic Farmers

Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo asked the domestic tobacco industry to prioritize the products of local tobacco farmers since the tobacco harvest will coincide with the arrival of the peak dry season. Ganjar said he has relayed this information to the domestic tobacco industry actors.

2. Basarnas Polemic; Jokowi to Evaluate Military, Police Officers Having Civilian Posts

President Joko Widodo or Jokowi stated that he would conduct an evaluation of the Indonesian Military (TNI) and Police (Polri) officers who hold positions in government institutions following the polemic of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) chief Air Vice Marshal Henri Alfiandi who was named a suspect in the alleged graft case. Henri is a high-ranking military officer.

Jokowi underlined that he did not want acts of corruption to occur in critical civilian posts. “Everything will be evaluated. Not only this (Basarnas), everything,” he said after inaugurating the Ciliwung tunnel project in Jakarta, Monday, July 31, 2023.

The evaluation, he clarified, is not based on the occurrence of inter-agency conflicts in the handling of the Basarnas case. It is aimed at preventing corrupt practices from happening in state institutions.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo urges batik designers to innovate their designs in order to penetrate the global market since Indonesia targets US$100,000,000 in batik export throughout 2023.

"For novelty, let's go back to the designs, to new colors. I believe our batik could be used for carpets and interior designs, and these innovations would boost the batik brand to the next level," said Jokowi in Senayan Park, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, August 2, 2023.

Jokowi reported that the batik export value in the January to April 2023 period reached US$26.7 million. He's optimistic to surpass that number at the end of the year since the Pandemic threats are over.
