Transportation, Cigarettes, Food Items Push Inflation Up to 3.09% in July

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Statistics Indonesia, or BPS, released the Development of the July 2023 Consumer Price Index on Tuesday, August 1. The central statistics agency noted that annual inflation in July 2023 stood at 3.08 percent with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) score of 115.24 percent, up from the previous month's 111.80.

BPS's deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics, Pudji Ismartini, said that July's annual inflation reflected a consecutive decline since March 2023; from 4.97 percent, to 4.33 percent, to 4.00 percent, 3.52 percent, and now 3.08 percent.

Pudji said that the biggest contributing factor to July's annual inflation was the transportation group with an inflation of 9.58 percent (yoy). It accounted for 1.17 percent of general inflation. The next is the food, beverage, and tobacco group with an inflation of 1.90 percent (yoy) and contributing 0.51 percent.

The only group that experienced annual deflation in July 2023 was information, communication, and financial services which was recorded at 0.24 percent with a share of 0.01 percent.

Based on commodities, the biggest contributors to the annual inflation in July were gasoline (0.83 percent), rice (0.38 percent), filter clove cigarettes (0.21 percent), house rent (0.13 percent), and indoor transportation city (0.09 percent).

Of 90 CPI cities in Indonesia, all experienced annual inflation in July with 46 cities recording higher inflation than the national average. 

The cities with the highest inflation were Merauke City, Papua Province with 5.21 percent (yoy), followed by Luwuk in Central Sulawesi (4.77 percent) and Wangapu in East Nusa Tenggara (4.56 percent).

The city with the lowest inflation was Gunungsitoli with 0.50 percent (yoy).
