TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan offered a trilateral partnership in the form of an alliance of tropical forests and carbon to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
This proposal was conveyed by Luhut during his working visit to Kinshasa where he met with Congo’s President Felix Tshisekedi and a number of key stakeholders.
“We submitted President Jokowi's proposal to establish trilateral cooperation in the form of an alliance of tropical forests and carbon, involving Brazil, DRC, and Indonesia,” Luhut said in a written statement, Thursday, July 13, 2023.
The alliance aimed at combining efforts to protect tropical forests and fight climate change. “That shows the joint commitment of the countries involved,” he added. The alliance was scheduled to be signed on August 25, 2023.
Other than discussing trilateral cooperation, Luhut and President Felix explored the potential for cooperation in a number of fields, including industrialization, digitization, decarbonization, interconnection, economic distribution, and education.
Luhut presented Indonesia's experience and strategy in these fields. “Indonesia and DRC have great potential to achieve sustainable economic growth,” he remarked.
He hopes that the cooperation between the two countries could be mutually beneficial and contribute to sustainable economic development in Congo and other African countries.
“Indonesia and the DRC continue to be committed to sustainable development, environmental preservation, and mutual growth. We work together to face challenges and take advantage of opportunities in the future for the greatest benefit to the people of both countries,” Luhut said.
