TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government opens opportunities for traditional goods and services such as batik, jamu (herbal medicine), and gentong (huge rounded clay pots) to be registered as international brands. Andap Budhi Revianto, Secretary General of the Law and Human Rights Ministry, stated that this good news came from Geneva, Switzerland.
“I received encouraging information from Law and Human Rights Minister Yassona H Laoly who is currently attending the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, that Indonesian traditional products can become international brands,” Andap said in Jakarta, Monday, July 10, 2023.
According to him, international marks can be used for specific goods and services due to the accession of the Nice Agreement on the International or Nice Classification of Goods and Services.
Nice Agreement is an international agreement that establishes a classification of goods and services for the purposes of registering trademarks and service marks. Indonesia has an instrument of accession to this international agreement in a bid to ease local goods being classified and achieved global status.
Andap explained that Minister Yasonna engaged in diplomacy with the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Daren Tang, at the WIPO headquarters in Geneva last Friday to address the issue.
“Through Nice Agreement, Indonesia can include a list of traditional goods and services, such as jamu, gentong, batik, and other traditional products into the List of Goods and Services regulated in Nice Agreement,” Andap reiterated.
Accession to Nice Agreement will boost the promotion of Indonesian unique and traditional brands, as well as facilitate the determination of the classification of goods in national and international mark registration through the Madrid Protocol.
“With this accession, Indonesia will enhance its national trademark system to meet international standards in trademark registration,” Andap concluded.
