Dozens of Traffic Lights in Jakarta Backed with AI Technology to Lessen Congestion

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Transportation Agency used artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the traffic lights system at 20 intersections across the capital in a bid to tackle traffic jams.
“So there are 20 intersections that have implemented AI with an Intelligent transport system at the traffic lights,” Jakarta Transportation Agency Head Syafrin Liputo said as quoted from Antara today, July 3, 2023.
The AI technology will monitor and manage the timing of traffic signals based on Google's internal database. It will also strengthen the function of the traffic management system and compute the actual volume of traffic at road crossings.
Syafrin said that AI technology could find out the ratio between road capacity and traffic density on the road. AI will also give priority to public transport routes such as TransJakarta.
“So, the traffic light can see which road is congested, so the timing of the green light will be set longer,” he explained.
At present, AI-based traffic lights have been operating at 20 road crossings. The Jakarta Transportation Agency is determined to apply it in 40 more intersections. The 20 road crossings are as follows:
- Jembatan 2 Raya - Jalan Tubagus Angke
- Jalan Kyai Tapa - Jalan Daan Mogot (Grogol)
- Jalan S. Parman - Jalan Tomang Raya
- Jalan S. Parman - Jalan KS. Tubun - Jalan Gatot Subroto (Slipi)
- Jalan Gatot Subroto - Jalan Rasuna Said (Kuningan)
- Jalan Gatot Subroto - Jalan Supomo (Pancoran)
- Jalan MT Haryono - Jalan Sutoyo (Cawang Uki)
- Jalan DI Panjaitan - Jalan Kalimalang
- Jalan Ahmad Yani - Jalan Utan Kayu (Rawamangun)
- Ahmad Yani Street - Jalan Pemuda - Jalan Pramuka
- Jalan Ahmad Yani - Jalan H. Ten
- 12. Jalan Perintis Kemerdekaan - Jalan Letjen Suprapto
