TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded 44 aftershocks following a 6.4-magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Indian Ocean, south of Yogyakarta on Friday evening (June 30).

"As of July 1, 2023, at 8 a.m. local time, BMKG recorded 44 aftershocks, with the largest magnitude of M 4.2," BMKG's Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center Daryono explained on Saturday.

He noted that the main earthquake struck on Friday (June 30) at 7:57 p.m. local time, at the coordinates of 8.63 degrees south latitude and 110.08 degrees east longitude, 81 kilometers south of Wates City, Yogyakarta, some 67 km underwater.

By observing the epicenter and hypocenter, he stated that the earthquake was an intermediate type due to the subduction of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian Plates.

The source mechanism analysis showed that this earthquake had a thrust fault mechanism.

Residents in Klaten, Ponorogo, Kebumen, Nganjuk, and Cilacap felt the earthquake very strongly, at the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) Scale IV.

MMI IV scale shocks can cause pottery to break, windows and doors to creak, and cause walls to make noise.

Meanwhile, Karangkangkates, Kediri, Kulon Progo, Wonogiri, Yogyakarta City, Sleman, and Purworejo felt the vibrations at an intensity scale of MMI III-IV. MMI III scale tremors feel similar to a truck passing close by.

People in Madiun, Purbalingga, Purwokerto, Banjarnegara, Mojokerto, Demak, Pacitan, Gresik, Jepara, Blitar, Solo, Garut, and Pangandaran felt the tremors at the MMI III scale.

Daryono said the earthquake did not potentially cause a tsunami.

The BMKG appealed to the public to remain calm and not be affected by unreliable information and avoid cracked or damaged buildings.

"Make sure your residential building is earthquake-resistant," he remarked.
