TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale rocked the Regency of Bantul, Special Region of Yogyakarta, at 19:57 Friday night, June 30, 2023
The BMKG's Earthquake and Tsunami Center head, Daryono, said the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 8.63 south latitude and 110.80 east longitude, or 86 km southwest of Bantul. The epicenter is located at sea at a depth of 25 km.
BMKG said that the earthquake has no potential for a tsunami but reminded the public to stay alert for possible aftershocks. "Watch out for aftershocks that might occur," he said.
The earthquake struck twice at first as felt in the urban areas of Yogyakarta. A third one was recorded at around 20:32, at was also felt by the duty officers on the slopes of Mount Merapi.
"The earthquake in Bantul was also felt at Mount Merapi's monitoring posts," head of the Yogyakarta Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) Agus Budi Santoso said on Friday.
Agus said that so far the earthquake has had no effect on Merapi's activity, which is still in an alert status or Level III with ongoing eruptions.
