Earthquake Jolts Malang, Blitar This Morning

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake measuring a magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter scale rocked Malang Regency, East Java. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that it occurred on Monday, June 26, at 08:16:15 Western Indonesian Time (WIB).
According to the agency’s head for the quake and tsunami center Daryono in a press release, the quake was located in the sea at a distance of 82 kilometers southwest of Malang Regency, with a depth of 32 kilometers.
“This is a shallow quake triggered by local fault activity,” he added.
The shaking was felt in Trenggalek, Gondanglegi, Kepanjen, Jember, Tulungagung, and Malang areas at the intensity level of II MMI. This means the quake is felt by a few people and light-hanging objects swing.
A stronger tremor at the intensity level of III MMI was reported in Karangkates, Blitar. Level III means it felt like a passing truck. Until now, there is no report of damages caused by the incident.
As of 08:33 WIB, the BMKG did not detect any aftershocks. Hundreds of netizens swarmed the agency’s social media. They claimed to have felt the earthquake’s shaking in Trenggalek, Tulungagung, Kepanjen, and Blitar.
