TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Chair of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) central executive board, Andy Budiman, said that the party is confident in supporting two of President Joko Widodo or Jokowi’s sons in the 2024 elections. The party will endorse Solo Mayor Gibran Rakabuming to become a candidate for Jakarta Governor and his younger brother, Kaesang Pangarep, as a candidate for Depok Mayor in the 2024 elections.
Andy said he is not worried about the political dynasty in President's family if Gibran and Kaesang really lead Jakarta and Depok, respectively.
“The dynasty is problematic if it is in a non-democratic closed system,” he said at the PSI office, Menteng, Central Jakarta, Friday, June 23, 2023.
Andy opined that a political dynasty occurs when someone leads an organization and then determines their offspring to become or hold a certain position. “Regarding Kaesang for Depok election, Pak Jokowi doesn't have a political party there,” he added.
Regional head elections, he underlined, are ultimately in the hands of the people through a democratic process. PSI deems that regional elections are a democratic and legitimate process.
Additionally, Andy said that he did not witness any fraud, non-transparency, or power mobilization in the process. Thus, PSI encouraged Kaesang to run in the 2024 Depok election. Andy said that President Jokowi’s youngest son will bring a new color to Indonesia’s politics.
“I liken Depok to people who live in cramped rooms for the last 25 years,” the PSI politician said.
PSI Depok has long declared its support for Kaesang Pangarep in the regional election. A number of volunteers have also appeared.
