TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo stated that the Satellite of the Republic of Indonesia or SATRIA-1 Satellite is the government's effort to provide equal distribution of digital infrastructure development.
“The launch of SATRIA-1 is one of our efforts for equal distribution of digital infrastructure development in public service centers throughout Indonesia,” the President wrote in his official Instagram @jokowi on Monday, June 19, 2023.
The post includes a nine-minute and 32-second video showing SATRIA-1's launch into space from Florida, United States.
SATRIA-1 was launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, using a Falcon 9 rocket belonging to the Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) on Sunday, June 18, at 18:21 local time or Monday at 05:21 Jakarta time.
Jokowi stated that SATRIA-1 is the government's first multifunctional satellite that has the largest capacity in Asia. “This satellite will occupy an orbit of 146 degrees BT (east longitude) right above Papua,” he also wrote.
After being launched and precisely at the set coordinate, the satellite will undergo an In-Orbit Testing phase by PT Pasifik Satelit Nusantara (PSN) in tandem with French-Italian firm Thales Alenia Space (TAS) to ensure the device functions normally.
The In-Orbit Testing phase is expected to take around three weeks before the satellite enters the next stage, namely the In-Orbit Acceptance Review (IOAR) which is projected to be carried out in December 2023.
Based on the results of the latest study by the Telecommunications and Information Accessibility Agency (BAKTI) of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, the satellite will start operating in 50,000 points of public facilities in January 2024.
The internet speed at each point is projected to reach 4 Mbps, higher than the initial estimate of 1 Mbps when the SATRIA-1 project was initiated in mid-2018.
Acting Director of BAKTI Kominfo Ministry Arief Tri Hardiyanto stated that the government will immediately determine priority points for the internet service.
“We will invite representatives of the Education and Culture Ministry, the Health Ministry, the local government, the National Police, and the Indonesian Military (TNI) to identify service points currently needed to be prioritized in preparing the ground segment,” Arief said in Orlando, Florida, US, Sunday local time.
