TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo responded to the statement made by would-be presidential candidate Anies Baswedan regarding the leadership relay. Anies said future leadership is not only about continuing the previous government's programs but achieving national goals.
In response, Jokowi said that the next president should instead continue programs run by the previous leader.
“There must be continuity, it must be. If the leadership [level] has reached high school, then enter university, don't go back to elementary school again,” he said at the Djakarta Theater Building, Central Jakarta, Thursday, June 15, 2023.
The state head made an analogy of leadership to a gas pump meter at a gas station that always starts from zero. This, he emphasized, cannot be applied in leadership.
“How can it be like a gas station meter? If you have graduated from kindergarten, elementary, and junior high school, then enter a high school and university, then master's and doctoral degrees. Don't go back and forth, [like] poco-poco,” he said, mentioning a traditional dance that involves constant back-and-forth swaying.
On May 30, at the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) event, Anies who is the former governor of Jakarta stated that the election is not only a matter of continuing the previous government's program but paving the way for the country’s goals.
Anies Baswedan's statement is considered to satirize a presidential candidate endorsed by the ruling party PDIP, Ganjar Pranowo, who is committed to continuing programs implemented by President Jokowi if he is elected in the 2024 election.
