Jakarta Partners with PLN to Turn Waste into Energy

9 June 2023 01:00 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Jakarta Provincial Government launched an environmentally friendly power generation program in tandem with state-owned power giant PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) to produce electricity from processing waste.

Acting Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono said the cooperation is part of the government's actions to reduce environmental pollution. One of them is the pollution caused by garbage.

“It’s one of the concepts for reducing waste [that is ended at] Bantar Gebang in cooperation with PLN,” Heru said on Thursday, June 8, 2023.

Heru said the waste-to-energy project will be centered on Integrated Garbage Disposal Sites (TPST) in Bantar Gebang. He hoped that this cooperation can reduce the burden on the waste capacity accommodated by the landfill.

“Cooperation with PLN is related to RDF (Refuse Derive Fuel). Indeed, the initial capacity is still small at one thousand tons per day. Later, when this can run well, we will surely think about [opening the project in] other areas,” he said.

In addition, the cooperation is expected to create jobs for the community, which will then help the government to lessen unemployment in the capital.

PLN Director Darmawan Prasodjo elaborated that around 3,000 tons of waste can be processed into solid waste weighing a thousand tons per day before being used as fuel for power plants.

“Because PLN has a target that in 2025, there will be a program called co-firing, in which the use of coal for steam-fueled power plant (PLTU) is mixed with waste or biomass. That will be part of the energy transition strategy,” Darmawan said.
