TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investments Luhut Pandjaitan claimed that sea sand export, which is no longer banned, will not be harmful to the environment. Luhut said that it would actually encourage improvements through deepened seabeds.
“Our type of sea sands will deepen [the seabed] and it will only get shallower if it is not done. So this is for the health of the ocean too,” said Luhut in the International and Indonesia CCS Forum 2023 press conference on Tuesday, May 30, 2023.
According to the Minister, major reclamation will be done at Rempang Island, Batam, at the Riau Islands, which will pave the way for the solar panel industry.
“Surely it will not [harm the environment]. Because there is a GPS now and such, we can assure that the construction will [not harm the environment],” said Luhut.
Indonesia had previously imposed a ban on exporting sea sands for 20 through the Ministry of Industry and Trade Regulation No.117/MPP/Kep/2/2003. The decree specifically stated that such a ban is introduced to prevent wider environmental damages.
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo recently issued Government’s Regulation (PP) No. 26 of 2023 on the management of sea sedimentation which oversees a series of activities of transportation, placement, use, and sale, including the export of sedimentation products at sea in the form of sea sand.
