TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police’s Narcotics Directorate found indications of the use of money from drug trafficking for the 2024 elections in a number of regions. Deputy director Sr. Comr. Jayadi said this is based on the development of the arrest of legislative members.
“There is an alleged use of money from illicit drug trafficking for the 2024 elections,” Jayadi said to Tempo on Wednesday, May 24, 2023.
On this basis, he said the police instructed personnel to prepare anticipative measures during the technical meeting in Bali on May 24-25 which will be attended by directors of narcotics investigation units throughout the archipelago.
Director of the Narcotics Directorate Brigadier General Mukti Juharsa meanwhile emphasized that the use of drug funds is merely a possibility. He said the police will cooperate with the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) when accurate data is collected.
“We will enforce the law if this truly happens. We will discuss this in the meeting of the National Police's Narcotics Investigation Directorate so that the directors of the narcotics investigation units can anticipate it,” Mukti said.
The 2024 elections process has begun. The General Election Commission (KPU) has received the registrations of legislative candidates from the contesting parties. The verification of the candidates is still ongoing.
