TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Health Agency recorded 99 suspected cases of polio in the capital city throughout 2023. The sub-region recording the highest number of cases is East Jakarta with 33 cases.
The second highest number of cases was recorded by 25 cases in West Jakarta, 18 cases in South Jakarta, 17 cases in North Jakarta, 5 cases in Central Jakarta, and 1 case in the Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu).
Out of the 99 suspected cases, the Health Agency confirmed 46 of them were not caused by the polio virus.
“We checked 46 feces samples and found them to be negative [of polio],” said Jakarta health agency’s Head of Epidemiology and Immunization Surveillance Section Ngabila Salama in a statement on Friday, May 19.
The agency continues to actively conduct tests and disseminate prevention measures, with routine immunization included in its program, especially across residential areas that have a low immunization ratio.
"The polio immunization achievement in Jakarta from 2019 to 2022 reached the target of above 95 percent, except during the 2020 pandemic," said Ngabila.
