TEMPO.CO, BandungState-pharmaceutical firm Bio Farma has received the technical vision from U.S. pharmacy Merck Sharp Dohme (MSD) in the development and partnership of locally-produced Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.

Previously on December 13, the two pharmaceutical firms signed a partnership that includes a technological transfer deal in producing local HPV vaccines.

“We are hoping that this meeting will discuss elevating our planned facilities to produce HPV vaccines,” said Bio Farma president director Honesti Basyir on May 15, 2023. “I convey my appreciation as this is our collective commitment in progressively collaborating to improve Indonesia’s and the global quality of health.”

In the latest meeting, Bio Farma met with MSD representatives; Director Ravi Sangam, Director of Engineering Nancy Schaffner, Associate Director Device and Packaging Technology Joris den Ouden, and Associate Principal Scientist Charles Lachman.

Meanwhile, MSD Indonesia representatives were also present in the form of Managing Director George Stylianou, Business Unit Director Farida Malawi, External Affairs Director Dudit Triyanto, and Finance Director Pri Hartanto.

MSD Indonesia’s managing director George Stylianou, in response, said the team is committed to delving into the partnership. “This is an incredible honor for us to collaborate with Bio Farma. This is why we are here seated together thru a collective major transformation to start a program that has an incredible end goal.”

“This HPV vaccine project is the start of another project between MSD and Bio Farma that will be realized that will show the commitment to improving a better future in healthcare,” said George.

Bio Farma has previously launched the Cerviscan diagnostic tool for early detection of HPV, which causes cervical cancer. WHO noted that cervical cancer ranks second in cancer cases in the world with 36,633 cases or equivalent to 9.2 percent of total cancer cases in the world.
