TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Traffic congestion has started to form across streets in the capital following the end of the Eid al-Fitr holidays. This marks the return of Jakarta’s chronic problem related to endless traffic jams.
One of the strategies already set in place includes the implementation of electronic road pricing (ERP) system.
An expert on the issues of transportation from Sugijapranata University, Djoko Setijowarno, assessed that the electronic toll road system can be a permanent solution to overcome traffic congestion in Jakarta.
"ERP, otherwise known as 'congestion charging', is a traffic control method, which aims to reduce demand for road use to a point where demand for road use no longer exceeds road capacity," Djoko said, Antaranews reported on Thursday, May 4, 2023.
According to Djoko, who also assumes the position of Deputy Head of Empowerment and Regional Strengthening of the Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI), ERP is claimed to be able to reduce traffic jams, shorten travel time, improve traffic safety, and change people's behavior in traffic.
Djoko also said that electronic law enforcement could reduce the bureaucratic processes related to traffic violations and improve public order.
"Public transportation in Jakarta is quite good. Those with personal vehicles must be forced out of their cars and want to take public transportation. With the ERP, people are faced with a rationale in choosing public transportation modes," said Djoko.
