TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Labor Party President Said Iqbal claimed that he had invited two presidential candidates who reject the Omnibus Law on Job Creation to attend the commemoration of International Labor Day on May 1, 2023.
"There is a high probability that the 2024 presidential candidates will attend [the May Day rally]. But we have not received confirmation. But one thing for sure, we will not invite presidential candidates who support the Omnibus Law," Iqbal said on Thursday, April 27, 2023.
Iqbal explained that the labor group planned to mobilize 100,000 people to stage a demonstration in front of the State Palace and the Constitutional Court Building on May 1. After that, the mass will move to Istora Senayan to hold the May Day Fiesta which will be enlivened by speeches from workers.
"The Labor Party will organize the May Day. 50,000 to 100,000 people across West Java, Banten, and Jakarta's surrounding regions will come to Jakarta. As of today, nearly 50,000 have been registered," Iqbal said in an online press conference.
At the May Day Fiesta, he said there would be speeches given by the invited presidential candidates. Even so, Iqbal said that of the two people invited, only one indicated that he would attend.
However, he stopped short of revealing the names of the presidential candidates who will deliver speeches at the event. It was strongly suspected that the two are Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo and former Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan.
This is because both are among the four names to be supported by the Labor Pary in the upcoming presidential election. "The Labor Party's National Working Meeting concludes four names [to be endorsed in the election]; Ganjar Pranowo, Anies Baswedan, Said Iqbal, and Najwa Shihab,” he said.
Meanwhile, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto expressed support for the Omibus Law on October 12, 2020. He said that 80 percent of labor requests had been accommodated in the omnibus law. However, he acknowledged that all labor demands could not be met fully for various reasons.
