Pelindo Logs Ship Passenger Rise Amid Eid Mass Exodus

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned port operator Pelindo (PT Pelabuhan Indonesia) on Tuesday announced that it logged 999,455 sea transportation passengers had traveled through ports it operates up until one day after the Eid al-Fitr holiday, which marks the annual exodus. 

The company’s spokesperson Ali Mulyono acknowledged that there had been a steady increase in sea transportation passengers in each passing annual mass exodus, which is locally dubbed the mudik.

“[We notably] monitored 139,982 vehicles passing through the Roro Terminal managed by Pelindo,” Ali elaborated in a press statement on April 25. 

One of its ports that saw the most passenger congestion during this year’s Eid holidays was the Tanjung Pinang Port, which served 116,461 people. Subsequently, the second most congested was Tanjung Perak Port which saw 115,930 passenger traffic, and ranking third was Tanjung Balai Karimun with 68,111 people. 

Ali said, the volume of users of sea transportation modes in Eid this year increased by 24 percent compared to the same period in 2022 which logged 805,418 sea transport passengers in total.

During this year’s Eid mass exodus, Pelindo had prepared parking areas amounting to a total of 13,652 square meters specifically to accommodate logistical vehicles and 8,817 square meters for personal vehicles, mainly motorcycles.
