TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta is seeing an increase in Covid-19 cases. The hike comes with the emergence of the Omicron's new subvariant, the XBB 1.16, also known as the Arcturus.
Ngabila Salama, the Jakarta Health Office's section chief of surveillance, epidemiology, and immunization, said there are now five cases of the Arcturus subvariant found in Jakarta.
"Be aware that there are now five cases of Arcturus in Jakarta. This subvariant has new, characteristic symptoms, which are red eyes and eye discharge," said Ngabila in his statement, Tuesday, April 18.
Ngabila said that one of the five patients had just returned from a trip to India, while four other cases were of local transmissions in Jakarta.
Four of the cases have recovered while one is in self-quarantine. Ngabila had said that she did not rule out the possibility that this Arcturus variant is what caused the Covid case hike in Jakarta.
However, she revealed that the Covid-19 situation in Jakarta in the past week was still under control even despite the increasing number of cases and positivity rate.
