TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A firearm owned by an individual with the initials HW, who is said to be a director of a state-owned enterprise (SOEs), had accidentally discharged as it was being inspected by authorities at the checking counter area in the Sultan Hasanuddin Airport in Makassar on Monday, April 17.
Reports suggest the firearm discharged after it accidentally fell to the floor, specifically when it was being picked up. This incident reportedly involved a protocol team member but fortunately did not claim any victims.
The South Sulawesi Police spokesperson commissioner Komang Suartana clarified on Wednesday that the gun discharged as it fell as officials were checking the firearm to unload the bullets from the gun.
“The trigger was accidentally pulled as they were picking the gun up from the floor,” said Komang to Tempo on April 19.
Moreover, he elaborated that the gun owner HW first arrived at the airport’s departure area and was picked up and guided by a representative of the protocol team to the checking counter area, which police said is identified as F.
The individual then notified the air carrier about the gun’s existence, which police said had been loaded with rubber bullets. F was then questioned by the airport’s aviation security personnel. The documents also show that HW is the legal owner of the firearm until April 28, 2023.
An administrational sanction will be handed to F due to a procedural mistake. The firearm itself had been confiscated by the Angkasa Pura representatives before it was handed to Sultan Hasanuddin Airport officials.
