Eid al-Fitr; Metro Jaya Police Ban 'Takbiran' Convoys Using Motorized Vehicles

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Metro Jaya Police prohibited residents of the Jakarta metropolitan area from conducting takbiran convoys by driving motorized vehicles during the eve of Eid al-Fitr 1444 Hijri. People are highly advised to do 'takbiran', or chanting the name of God repeatedly, at nearby mosques or houses of prayer.
“We don't allow convoys on takbiran night, let alone using a car or motorcycle,” said Metro Jaya Police’s Traffic Director Sr. Comr. Latif Usman, as quoted by Antara today, April 19.
However, Latif stated that takbiran convoys by foot are actually permissible, rather than by driving a vehicle. He ensured that Metro Jaya Police officers would disperse the takbiran convoy with motorbikes and cars.
“We will stop them and warn them to takbiran in the provided space, for example, at the mosque,” Latif said.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs planned to conduct an isbat or confirmation meeting on Thursday, April 20, during which monitoring of the new moon in order to determine the beginning of Shawwal 1444 Hijri or Eid al-Fitr 2023.
