TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta acting governor Heru Budi Hartono on Tuesday officially discouraged residents of the capital city who travel to their hometown in the upcoming Eid homecoming – an annual mass exodus tradition also dubbed ‘mudik’ – from bringing additional family members to live in Jakarta.
The governor had ordered the city’s public order agency (Satpol PP) and the demographic affairs office to disseminate this message to the public.
“Once they return from their hometown back to Jakarta, the demographic affairs office and Satpol PP along with the transportation agency should announce this to residents [of Jakarta], that they shouldn’t return here with their relatives,” said the governor in Central Jakarta on April 11.
In his acceptance speech, as he led the Jakarta Provincial Government’s Eid homecoming ‘Preparedness Call’ held at the National Monument (Monas), Heru Budi signaled that the capital city is on the verge of overpopulation.
He also noted that the issue of overpopulation will affect the city’s regional budget as the city government must provide for this population growth. Especially for migrants who have not settled in with permanent means of income.
“Jakarta’s population has already reached 11.7 million,” said the acting governor.
