TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Greater Jakarta Police is preparing posts for monitoring homecomers with motorcycles during the Eid Homecoming journey or Mudik.
"At the monitoring posts, we will check and stop vehicles that are not suitable and not liable, that are very dangerous for others and for the motorists themselves,” said Greater Jakarta Police’s director of traffic Senior Commissioner Latif Usman on Monday.
Usman added that his side will monitor routes that are usually crossed by motorcycle riders.
"Our main target is the route from Kalimalang to the Bekasi border and from the west (Jakarta) to Tangerang through Daan Mogot, and to the tip of Serang; these will be our target, especially the alternative motorcycle routes,” he said.
He advised travelers not to ride motorcycles for the homecoming trip, saying motorbikes should only be used for short distances.
"With the free homecoming trip from the police and related agencies in Jakarta, motorbike users are expected to switch to the free homecoming program or ride buses," he said.
Usman informed that his party will prioritize educating travelers on the dangers of riding motorcycles for the homecoming trip.
Earlier, the government estimated that 123.8 million people will travel during the Eid al-Fitr 1444 Hijri holiday.
During the holiday period, at least 99.22 million people are expected to use land transportation, of which 22.07 percent (27.32 million people) will use private cars, 20.3 percent (25.13 million people) will use motorcycles, 18.39 percent (22.77 million people) will ride the buses, 11.69 percent (14.47 million people) will ride the trains, and 7.7 percent (9.53 million people) will use rental cars.
With the expected surge in travelers during this Eid Homecoming period, the government is encouraging travelers not to use motorbikes as they are one of the biggest factors behind road accidents.
