Workers Ready to Protest Job Creation Law

3 April 2023 19:05 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Labor Party and trade union organizations will stage an initial demonstration to protest against Omnibus Law on Job Creation or Job Creation Law.

Labor Party President Said Iqbal stated that the Party strongly oppose Law No. 6 of 2023 concerning the Stipulation of Government Regulation Number 2 of 2022 concerning Job Creation to Become a Law (Job Creation Law).

"Starting tomorrow, April 4, there will be a rally at the DPR attended by approximately 500 people. The demand is to reject the Omnibus Law Law No. 6 of 2023 concerning Job Creation," Said Iqbal said in his official statement, on Monday, April 3, 2023.

The rally, Iqbal continued, will be a preliminary action and will be carried out simultaneously in several regions such as Semarang, Surabaya, Makassar, Batam, and others.

Iqbal explained that national and regional actions will be staged weekly, starting April 4, 11, and 17. “The next action will be a rally by 500,000 workers on May Day, or May 1, 2023, throughout Indonesia,” Iqbal added.

Iqbal added that the Labour Party also planning to hold a national strike which will be joined by 5 million workers. this strike will later stop production in at least 100,000 factories and companies throughout the country.

"We will then exercise a long march on the Bandung-Jakarta route to campaign for the rejection of the Job Creation Law on May 5 to 12, 2023," Iqbal said.

Said Iqbal also confirmed that the Party will launch international and national campaigns, by filing a report to the Director General of the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) so that international solidarity actions are staged at the Indonesian Embassies around the world.

“We will also hold a national campaign through social media and mainstream media,” Iqbal added.

Moreover, efforts to reject the Job Creation Law are also executed through a judicial review of the Job Creation Law, both formal and material tests. The lawsuit is planned to be filed as soon as April 15, 2023.

In addition to the Omnibus Law on Job Creation, the series of demonstrations will also demand the repeal of the Manpower Minister’s Regulation Number 5 of 2023 on the 25-percent cut of workers’ salaries. The Labor Party together with the labor union organizations is set to file a lawsuit at the State Administrative Court on this issue.
