Job Creation Law to Spark Workers Union's Strike at Busiest Seaport

27 March 2023 13:23 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Transportation Workers Union (SBTN) deputy Burhanuddin on Sunday stated that members of the union will go on strike in protest against the House of Representatives (DPR) which passed the Job Creation Law on March 21. He threatened to conduct a mass strike that will cripple one of the country’s largest and busiest seaports, Tanjung Priok.

Burhanuddin stated that they would carry out the mass strike if the government and House legislators do not heed their demand to repeal the widely-protested law. He also claims laborers at Tanjung Priok Port are ready to go on strike.

"All of us union members at the Tanjung Priok seaport will strike and cripple activities at Tanjung Priok," he said in a press conference in front of the House headquarters on Sunday, March 26.

Workers' unions have generally protested the Law’s substance which is arguably demeaning and harmful to Indonesian workforces. The SBTN deputy highlighted the law’s regulation overseeing minimum wage, job termination, to maternity leave that has been overlooked.

Apart from announcing a strike, Burhanuddin also claims members of its union will not vote for political parties that agree on the passing of the Job Creation law.
