TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police’s Code of Ethics Commission (KKEP) decided to welcome back Richard Eliezer into the police corps during trial on Wednesday, February 22, 2023. The National Police Commission (Kompolnas) responded to people's concerns that the trial result was only based on populist narratives.
Kompolnas chairman Benny Mamoto said pros and cons in this matter were inevitable. He emphasized that the key point in the trial result was not about whether the KKEP’s decision was based on populism, but rather the police’s transparency in holding the trials of ethics for their members.
“Let’s respect the ethics trial that had been held. We should do this first. This will surely become a reference for other cases,” said Benny when met at the National Police HQ, Jakarta, on Wednesday, February 22.
Thus, he opined that transparency within the National Police is necessary so that the public could understand how the law enforcement institution resolves its internal problems.
Apart from that, Benny said the ethics trial’s decision could create a new culture within the Police, a whistleblower culture. “Hopefully it will serve as a trigger, a motivation for members who receive orders that violate legal, moral, and religious norms, to be brave refusing them,” he said.
Richard Eliezer was sentenced to one year and six months by a panel of judges at the South Jakarta District Court for being guilty as the accomplice in the murder case of Nofrianysah Yosua Hutabarat or Brigadier J which was orchestrated by the former head of the National Police's Professional and Security Division or Propam, Ferdy Sambo.
