TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in his speech at the National Press Day commemoration on Thursday lamented that roughly 60 percent of advertising spending had been taken up by digital media, especially from foreign platforms.
“I heard a lot about this. Around 60 percent of advertisement spending was taken by digital media, especially foreign platforms. This is sad,” said Jokowi at North Sumatra on February 9.
According to Jokowi, the domination of foreign platforms on online media advertising spending will reduce the financial resources of conventional media. Even though some conventional media have also started to develop themselves into digital media, they are still dominated by foreign platforms.
"The advertisement spending dominance by foreign platforms has made it difficult for our domestic media," said Jokowi.
Due to this reason, the President openly urges for the discussion of the presidential decree draft on media sustainability to be accelerated and gave a one-month deadline to complete it. Jokowi believes the decree will be crucial in helping conventional media to face major challenges ahead.
The President previously said that the Minister of Communication and Informatics Johnny G. Plate had submitted an initiative permit regarding the draft presidential regulation on cooperation between digital platform companies and press companies to support quality journalism.
