Jakarta Legislator Worries Electronic Road Pricing System May Lead to Corruption

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Commission D member of the Jakarta City Council DPRD, Hardiyanto Kenneth, expressed concerns about the provincial government's plan to implement Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) on 25 Jakarta roads. He worries that the system might become a new land for corruption for rogue elements.
To avoid corruption in the ERP system, Kenneth suggested that the government be transparent and not rush in implementing it. The rule, he said, would be better implemented gradually, starting on protocol roads or office areas, for instance.
"It mustn't become a new land for corruption. Please explain and convey to the public what this money is for. The people must also be given a role to participate in this, so that everything is clear and transparent," he said as reported by Antara.
Forcing the ERP system, he fears, would create new problems. He mentioned how the plan is already being rejected by online ojek (ojol) drivers.
Furthermore, he argued that the ERP policy will have no significant impact in reducing congestion in Jakarta. Drivers, he believes, will simply look for other alternative roads, then the congestion points will move to non-protocol roads.
