TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Solo Mayor and President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s eldest son Gibran Rakabuming Raka on Tuesday said that he never buoyed his younger sibling Kaesang Pangarep to enter the country’s politics. However, Gibran assessed that his younger brother has the ability to do so if he intends.
Gibran highlighted his brother’s ability to learn quickly and acknowledged his brother’s intelligence in management, which he said is evident in Kaesang’s style in leading local football club Persis Solo.
“From my own assessment, take an example the Persis Solo [team]. Kaesang worked hard for the team and the PSSI extraordinary congress (KLB). He is intensely involved from that, I might argue that Kaesang is able [to enter politics],” said Gibran at the Solo City Hall on January 24.
Asked about his younger brother’s future in regard to a political party, Gibran hinted that Kaesang had asked himself and their father.
“Kaesang seems to be exploring, he is still asking here and there. He asked me. Asked our father (Jokowi),” said Gibran. “He showed interest to contribute and to assist.”
Gibran brushed off concerns about members of the public questioning an emergence of a political dynasty. He asserted that political contestation is a competition.
"You can win, you can lose. Yesterday Kaesang only expressed interest. You’ll have to ask Kaesang himself," said Gibran.
