TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police Chief, General Lityo Sigit Prabowo expressed his condolences to the victims who died in a deadly clash between workers at PT Gubbuster Nickel Industri (PT GNI) Smelter Factory in North Morowali, Central Sulawesi. The conflict, said Listyo, was triggered by a provocation to call a labour strike.
"We from the national police express our deepest condolences to all the families of the victims regarding the incident that occurred," said National Police Chief Listyo in his statement, Monday, January 16, 2023.
Apart from the provocations to call a labour strike, Listyo continued, several incidents related to industrial issues were being negotiated at the time.
Listyo also stated that the appearance of a viral video on social media, showing a foreign worker (TKA) beating an Indonesian Worker (TKI), triggered the clashes between workers.
"Thus, it resulted in workers attacking one another," he explained.

From the workers clashing incident, said Listyo, his group have arrested 71 preparators, with 17 of whom had been placed as suspects.
"Currently the incident has been handled by the police, some 71 perpetrators of vandalism have been arrested and 17 are currently suspects," he said.
Previously, the conflict between workers of PT GNI occurred on Saturday night, January 14, 2023. The clashes resulted in two deaths of Indonesian workers and one death of foreign workers.
