TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Agrarian Reform Consortium (KPA) published its 2022 year-end report, which records 212 agrarian conflicts throughout the year in 459 villages across 34 provinces.
"Based on KPA's observation from January to December, there were 212 agrarian conflicts happening across 34 provinces," said KPA secretary-general Dewi Sartika on Monday, January 9, 2023, while presenting the annual report.
Dewi said that the trend shows an increase in conflicts across a total area of 1 million hectares, which affects 346,000 families, which is 50 percent higher compared to 2021.
The plantation sector tops the list as it constitutes 99 percent of the entire agrarian conflict in 2022 covering 377,000 hectares of land and affecting 141,000 people. In second place is the infrastructure sector with a total of 32 conflicts while the property and real estate sector ranked third with a total of 26 conflicts. Last on the list is the mining sector.
"The mining sector records 21 conflicts, forestry recorded 20 conflicts, while the military sector recorded six conflicts where members of the public faced military facilities,” Dewi explained.
Dewi added that agrarian conflicts due to large-scale agricultural businesses or corporate-based agriculture sit in the seventh position along with agrarian conflicts that occur on the coasts of small islands where four agrarian conflicts occurred in total.
