TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi on Monday announced that additional flight slot requests have spiked 84 percent. The Ministry recorded there are at least 166 requests for new slots coming in. However, minister Budi said that it would be followed up with precision and the ministry would only approve those that have potential productivity.
“The President has ordered us that despite the enormous requests, they must be handled carefully. We must judge the connectivity’s productivity. If it lacks efficiency, then don’t give them the slot,” said Budi Karya in the video press conference uploaded by the Cabinet Secretariate Instagram account on December 26.
One of the domestic flight slot requests came from Air Asia, said Budi. The requests also came from air carriers overseas such as Singapore Airlines and other carriers from Turkey, Qatar, the Philippines, and Uzbekistan.
He also mentioned airport facility preparedness before approving the myriad of flight slots such as improvements in runway and traveler accommodation facilities which will prevent flight delays.
“We must make improvements. Services in international airports must be done well,” said Budi Karya Sumadi.
Overall, the minister said that the domestic commercial flights have reached a 71 percent recovery rate compared to 2019 with the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport already reaching a 90 percent recovery rate. International flights, meanwhile, have only reached a 33 percent recovery rate.
