TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Throughout 2022, there have been various diseases emerged causing concerns while Indonesia is still fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic. The Health Ministry has even declared the extraordinary occurrence of one of the diseases listed below.
- Acute Hepatitis
In May 2022, cases of acute hepatitis of unknown origin were reported. Three children suspected of having the disease died after being treated for two weeks. The May 4, 2022 edition of Koran Tempo noted that the disease was first discovered in 10 children in Central Scotland between January and March 2022.
All patients experienced symptoms similar to hepatitis, such as yellow skin and dark urine. Since its inception, at least 288 cases of mysterious acute hepatitis have been found in 20 countries, including Indonesia. The disease attacked children aged 1 month to 16 years.
- Monkeypox
This case was first confirmed on August 20, 2022. Based on Koran Tempo in its August 23, 2022 edition, the Health Ministry stated that the first patient was a 27-year-old male who had just returned from abroad on August 8, 2022.
The symptoms included fever, enlarged spleen, as well as rashes on the face, palms, feet, and genitals. After six days of having the symptoms, the patient took a test which turned positive for monkeypox.
- Acute Kidney Injury
In October 2022, cases of acute kidney injury among children continue to occur. Referring to Koran Tempo, the disease attacked 324 patients across 27 provinces. As of November 28, 2022, 202 patients died, 113 patients recovered, and nine other patients were still being treated.
The Health Ministry concluded that the spike in cases was triggered by the use of syrup drugs containing ethylene glycol (EG) and diethylene glycol (DEG) above the safe limit. Contamination of the two dangerous substances is suspected to exist in liquid medicine.
- Polio
The Health Ministry declared the extraordinary occurrence of polio after a case was found in Pidie Regency of Aceh in November 2022. Indonesia is a polio-free certified by the WHO back in 2014.
