TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo expressed his frustration at being accused of meddling and interfering in the determination of the political parties participating in the 2024 general elections. Although the accuser was not mentioned, he cited the phrase gigantic power used by the Syura Council chairman of the Ummat Party Amien Rais.
He asserted that determining parties eligible to contest in the election is the authority of the General Elections Commission (KPU). But those who failed, he said, accused the Palace of interfering with the decision.
“[There are sayings that] gigantic power intervened. I have no idea about it at all, this is under KPU,” said the state head when attending the Hanura Party’s 16th Anniversary in Jakarta JCC Senayan, Wednesday, December 21, 2022.
The Ummat Party is the only party that did not pass the KPU factual verification stage to enter the election.
On Tuesday, December 13, 2022, Amien Rais claimed that there is a gigantic power trying to get rid of his party from the 2024 elections. He said the party received valid information that KPU would pass all new parties and non-parliamentary parties, except the Ummat Party.
Amien referred to the gigantic power as the current regime. He considered KPU's decision very biased and odd.
The President further stressed that the KPU is independent, and the Palace is impossible to intervene. He also expressed worries that this accusation is getting wilder. “Then the Palace will be accused again, even though we don't know about coalitions between parties or meetings between party leaders,” Jokowi said.
