TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nothing unique should arise after police inspector Umbaran Wibowo was promoted to lead the Kradenan Police Sector in Central Java as police chief on December 12. Such news should come as a normal occurrence in the police institution, however, his promotion caused quite a stir as Umbaran was known for over a decade as a contributing journalist in state-run media TVRI.
Asked about this fact, the head of the Central Java TVRI Sifak said that he did not feel deceived by Umbaran. Sifak specifically denied that the broadcasting organization he leads was a victim of intelligence penetrating the media industry.
"We did not feel there was a plant, as we share the same character [views]. He dedicates himself to the country, we also do," said Sifak on Wednesday, December 14. “TVRI had somewhat "facilitated" state activities.”
The Central Java branch of TVRI was first aware of Umbaran’s status as a police officer roughly a month ago as the broadcasting company held a training session for the news contributors stationed in Salatiga City.
Umbaran, during this training program, verbally declared that he received an open position within the police institution. His confession was also his resignation as a contributing journalist. Sifak said Umbaran had been listed as a TVRI contributor since 2012.
“He spent 10 years as a TVRI contributor. Prior to this, he spent a few years in other media companies,” said the TVRI branch leader. “Throughout his 10-year tenure, Umbaran performed well,” he added in commenting about Umbaran’s ability to not reveal his true identity.
