TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several families of the Kanjuruhan Tragedy victims in Malang visited the Office of the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) on Thursday, November 17, 2022. About dozens of people were seen entering the building located in Menteng, Central Jakarta.

The victims' families came by bus from Malang directly to Jakarta. Apart from meeting with Komnas HAM, they were also scheduled to meet with the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) to report several findings related to the tragedy which claimed 135 lives.

3 Komnas HAM commissioners met with the families

Vice Commissioner of Komnas HAM, Abdul Haris Semendawai, confirmed the visit of the families of the Kanjuruhan victims to his office. They met with other Komnas HAM commissioners.

"The commissioners who will meet them will be Hari Kurniawan, Uli Parulian Sihombing, and Prabianto Mukti," he said when met in front of the Komnas HAM office.

The meeting between the victim's family and Komnas HAM was held behind closed doors. The victims' families were also reluctant to comment on their visit to Komnas HAM.

A brief chronology of the Kanjuruhan Tragedy

The Kanjuruhan tragedy occurred on October 1, 2022. This incident took place after the BRI League 1 match between Arema FC Malang and Persebaya Surabaya.

The incident started when the Arema FC supporters took to the field after the long whistle sounded. They said they wanted to give support to the players who had just lost to their rival.

The police who tried to control the situation then reacted by firing tear gas into the middle of the field and towards the stadium seats. As a result, thousands of people crowded toward the exit. Some of the exits were said to be closed resulting in a stampede. In addition to 135 deaths, hundreds of other people were reportedly injured.

Komnas HAM has released the results of its investigation into the Kanjuruhan Tragedy. They said there were a total of 7 forms of human rights violations in the incident. They also believe that there are parties who should be held responsible, but so far they have not been detained. Even though it claimed hundreds of human lives, Komnas HAM did not stipulate this incident as a gross violation of human rights.
