TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian-based media conglomerate MNC Group CEO Hary Tanoesoedibjo claimed that the government’s policy of migrating analog TV to digital ones dubbed analog switch-off (ASO) is disadvantageous to the people of Jabodetabek or Greater Jakarta because they no longer could enjoy watching TV unless having a set-top box installed.
“MNC Group realizes that turning off broadcasts with analog systems is very disadvantageous to the Jabodetabek people. It is estimated that 60 percent of the people can no longer enjoy analog television unless they buy a new set-top box or replace [the analog TV with] digital television or subscribe to satellite TV,” said Hary on his Instagram as quoted on Friday, November 4, 2022.
MNC Group had turned off analog TV broadcasts of RCTI, MNCTV, iNews, and GTV on Friday at 00:00 Jakarta time, which was claimed to be at the request of Coordinating Minister for Political, Law, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD.
According to the Perindo Party chair, his side complied with the government's policy even though MNC Group has not yet received a written letter regarding the revocation of analog broadcasting licenses in Jabodetabek to support the ASO program. Thus, he opined that there was no legal obligation for the company to migrate to digital TV.
The tycoon, however, argued that the government’s ASO program did not have a definite legal basis as it contradicts the Constitutional Court’s verdict Number 91/PPU-XVIII/2020 concerning the Job Creation Law.
Therefore, Hary confirmed that MNC Group planned to take legal action over the government’s ASO program to obtain legal certainty and for the public interest.
