TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The elected acting governor of Jakarta, Heru Budi Hartono, stated that the Ciliwung River normalization program will be one of his priority programs when leading the capital to replace current governor Anies Baswedan who will end the office term on October 16, 2022.
The river normalization program, he said, is one of the flood prevention programs that was asked by President Jokowi to be prioritized.
However, Heru asserted that he will not take the approach of eviction in the program. “We can dredge [the river] like in 2015 when I was with Pak Jokowi who served as the governor at that time. We explored the Ciliwung River up to the top until Kampung Melayu as I remembered. We dredged [the river], we cleaned the canal, and didn't have to relocate [residents],” said Heru at the State Palace, Central Jakarta, Wednesday, October 12, 2022.
Although his inauguration will take place on Monday, October 17, 2022, Heru said he has visited several city areas affected by the flood. Flood mitigation and control have become one of the priorities as instructed by the President.
Jokowi ordered Heru Budi Hartono to focus on three main problems in Jakarta. They are city spatial planning, flooding, and congestion. The President also reportedly shared high hopes for the acting governor who used to serve as the mayor of North Jakarta.
