Police Dorm Explosion Caused by Negligence Not Terror Act, Says Police Chief

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Police (Polri) spokesperson Dedi Prasetyo on Sunday evening of September 25 confirmed that an explosion happened at the police dormitory in Sukoharjo, Central Java, which injured one police personnel in brigadier Pradipta, who is a member of the Surakarta Police. 

He said the case is being investigated by a joint team, “A joint team is digging into the case,” said Dedi, Antaranews reported.

The joint team itself consists of members from the Central Java Police, Solo Police, and representatives from the anti-terrorist Densus 88. 

Initially, facts in the field revealed that following a sudden explosion, dormitory residents immediately scattered to look for the source of the sound and found the victim covered in blood, who was immediately taken to a nearby hospital.

This incident, according to a separate press conference recording by the Central Java Police chief Ahmad Luthfi distributed by the National Police main headquarters’ reporters stated that the explosion happened over an empty field beside the house owned by a Mobile Brigade Police personnel.

Luthfi confirmed that the explosion came from a package filled with black powder that is believed to be material used to fuel fireworks and that it is not related to terrorists. 

“This means that I can confirm that the explosion in our region at Sukoharjo is not linked to acts of terror and is only caused by negligence from a police member who caused the material to explode,” said Luthfi.

Initial investigation found that the black powder came from a package filled with fireworks fuel that was ordered from a company in Indramayu and was sent to a person identified as A in Klaten. 

The police chief confirmed that the police personnel who was badly injured in the explosion once was involved in a raid on online orders of fireworks material.
