TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia now uses electric cars as government officials' vehicles. President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, signed Presidential Instruction No.7/2022 on the matter on September 13, 2022.
Moeldoko, the Presidential Chief of Staff, said that the instruction is a manifestation of Jokowi's commitment to transition from fossil-based energy to green, renewable sources. The rule applies to all cabinet ministers, the Cabinet Secretary, the Presidential Chief of Staff, Attorney Generals, Commanders of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, the National Police Chief, heads of non-ministerial government institutions, secretarial leaders of state institutions, governors, as well as regents and mayors.
"To realize this grand design of energy transition, the government begins by transitioning and converting conventional vehicles to electric vehicles," Moeldoko said in a press release today, Thursday, September 15.
According to Moeldoko, President Jokowi ordered every minister to regional heads to prepare and issue regulations that support the acceleration of using EVs. Jokowi also instructed to allocate the budgets needed to support the program.
"While other countries are competing to save the world from the threat of climate change, we must not watch only. We must also be the main actors, and this Presidential Instruction provides the spirit to make that happen," Moeldoko remarked.
