TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's President Joko Widodo or Jokowi expressed his condolences over the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest reigning monarch in British history. On Thursday afternoon, Buckingham Palace announced the Queen's passing.
"I am deeply saddened by the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, a widely admired and beloved queen. My deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, the government, and the people of the UK," Widodo wrote on his Twitter account, Friday.
Buckingham Palace announced that the Queen died peacefully at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. She was 96 years old. Earlier on Thursday, doctors expressed concerns about the Queen's health and advised royal family members to come to Balmoral.
Charles, Prince of Wales, immediately ascended to the throne as King of the United Kingdom and Great Britain and head of states in 14 Commonwealth nations.
Queen Elizabeth II became the monarch in February 1952 at a very young age of 25. In 1974, she visited Indonesia with Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.
As Queen, Elizabeth II had met two Indonesian presidents, Soeharto and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
